How to free yourself from fear

“We should never stop seeking safety and justice, doing everything in our power to protect ourselves, our loved ones, our neighbors, our fellow humans. But we have a choice how much of our lives we give over to fear.”

This quote is from The Gift, a new book by Edith Eger, Holocaust survivor and one of my favorite authors. I thought it sort of summed up our year and offers a perspective about fear—that it’s our choice. We don’t have to live on red alert all the time. We can live comfortably and joyfully more often, and still be able to respond to a crisis when needed.

Sometimes we forget how to stop fear from taking over. We get anxious, or worried, and we can’t seem to shut off the thoughts. Here’s a few quick techniques that help:

  1. Give yourself a big hug, then slowly brush yourself from shoulders to elbows. Say to yourself: “Safe, secure, loved.” Repeat several times.

  2. Close your eyes and take a couple slow, deep breaths. Say to yourself: “Thank you fear for wanting to protect me, but that was then, this is now. I’ve got this.”

  3. It’s so easy to get caught up in someone else’s drama and feel like it’s yours. Ask yourself, “Is this my fear? Or someone else’s?” If it belongs to someone else, just drop it like a child drops a toy they’re no longer interested in and move on.

And as always, I’m available for private or group sessions if you need deeper understanding, support, or guidance through energy work or intuitive life coaching.
