Got stress? Try Havening.

I’ve heard from more of you this week than ever about how your anxiety and stress level were off the chart. Sooooo understandable. Lots of energy swirling in the collective consciousness, plus last Friday’s lunar eclipse intensified everything.

I thought I’d share a shortened version of a nice, calming technique that feels good and helps with stress. It’s called the Havening Technique. Created by Drs. Ronald Ruden and Steven Ruden, this technique is used to prevent PTSD, promote the feeling of safety, self-compassion, loving kindness, and enhanced well-being.   

Havening uses soothing touch which sends signals into the emotional brain conveying safety, connection, and love. Fear-based hormones are dissolved. Tension is replaced with calm. Your circulation returns to normal, your immune system gets a boost, and your focus shifts away from the things that upset you.

The three soothing touches are:

  1. Soft strokes down the sides of your face

  2. Cross your arms and softly stroke downward from your shoulders to your elbows

  3. Rub your palms together softly

These touches can be used individually by choosing the one that feels the most calming to you, or a combination of all three.

As you use your soothing touches, say out loud these three words: safe, connected, loved.

Start the technique by closing your eyes, take a couple nice deep breaths, then begin with your touches and say safe, connected, loved. Breathe deeply as you move through this exercise and repeat until you feel calm. Finish by placing your hands over your heart, take a breath, and anchor the feeling. 

Self-care is prime importance. You can’t help anyone when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Be kind and supportive with yourself as you would with a best friend.
