How does your liver affect mental health?

Through my work as an energy healer and intuitive mentor, I’m increasingly helping balance the liver energy of a greater share of my clients.

This is not surprising since the liver stores the emotions of anger and rage. When these big emotions are suppressed, people often develop symptoms of migraines, dizziness, lack of clarity, PTSD, depression, anxiety, worry, and depression.

Anger is not the problem. Anger is a physiological reaction and part of your body’s natural fight or flight response to threats. But a person in chronic fight or flight puts a lot of strain on the way the body functions, and I’ve been noticing the liver is taking a hit.

In addition to the above symptoms, I often hear complaints of brain fog, panic attacks, and insomnia. Sometimes these unwanted symptoms can also point to a stressed liver.

Why should you care about the health of your liver?

Because your liver is the primary detoxifier for your body. The blood travels through the liver where it is filtered and cleansed of toxins, then gets passed along to the body’s elimination system.

But that’s not all this amazing organ does:

  • Makes bile to aide digestion

  • Helps the blood clot

  • Metabolizes proteins, carbohydrates, and fats for body use

  • Stores vitamins and glycogen (an energy source)

  • Regulates the amount of blood in the body

When the liver is in overload and can’t do its job, toxins leach into the blood supply and adversely affect brain and body function creating many of the above symptoms.

Besides strong emotions of anger, what else contributes to liver dysfunction?

  1. Refined sugar and fructose

  2. Lack of exercise

  3. Processed foods, hydrogenated oils

  4. Alcohol

  5. Smoking

  6. Pharmaceuticals and drugs

(Side Note: it’s nearly impossible to remove pharmaceuticals from our water supply. Much of our drinking water contains these harmful toxins and what’s known as dangerous “forever chemicals,” especially in large city systems. If you want to know more, I included a couple links at the bottom.)

Now here’s some good news. The liver is also one of the fastest at healing itself once the harmful offenders are eliminated. Here’s some recommendations:

  • Create some kind of meditative practice such as journaling, talking things over with a trusted friend, spending time in nature, breathwork, therapy—whatever helps you relieve anger and stress

  • Eliminate high fructose corn syrup from your diet. Fructose converts to fat increasing the risk of a fatty liver

  • Switch to natural cleaning products and body care products

  • Avoid weight gain—eat healthy and exercise regularly

  • Don’t eat heavy meals before bed

  • Drink the purest water you can find

  • Don’t drink alcohol in excess

  • Use all medications and pain relievers sparingly and only when necessary

Take care of your liver and it will do a good job taking care of everything else in your body, including your mental health.
