Do you know how to mindfully rest?
This week as I tilled over the dirt in my vegetable gardens and finished winterizing my flower beds, I was thinking how much this end-of-season ritual mirrors my own life.
It’s this time of year when the daylight hours are shortening, I realize I also turn into bed earlier and have a lot more time dedicated to rest and inner focus. I look forward to the joy of family gatherings and a slower pace since the outside work of mowing, gardening, and baling are finished.
This can be a beautiful time of rejuvenation for each of us. The turning of the soil can symbolize the rooting up and turning over the dead overgrowth of a restless conditioned mind in order to create ground suitable for what the wisest part of us wishes to sow when it’s our time.
How we fight this glorious season of rest and moan about the weather and the dark. Yet we are not so different than nature. We need this quiet time of reflection and inner connection with the God essence that feeds our soul and our body. We need this time to mindfully slow things down and remember how much there is to appreciate about who we are and what this life shows us.
We need the winter and the quiet months to bring much needed perspective to a mind lost in busy distractions. We need the long soaks in the bathtub, the snuggly warm slippers and robes, bowls of hearty stews, spicy candles burning, rituals and traditions. We need the time to allow ourselves to just be and not think and do so we’re ready when it’s time for our new beginnings.
And like nature, we will know when that is after we’ve rested.
